Animals and critters tend to find their way into roofing systems seeking shelter from the elements. In the cooler months, they look for warmth and during the summer, they seek protection from the sweltering sun. While they can be cute, these creatures can wreck havoc on the elements of your roofing system.

Your roof & attic are the perfect nesting space for little critters.

An attic space tends to have HVAC equipment, electrical lines, insulation, family keepsakes, and many other essentials to keep your home functional. When animals make themselves at home, they can cause all sorts of damage. We’re going to help you further understand which critters could be living with you, how you can tell if there is something on your roof, and what to do to prevent this from happening.

Common Critters

Not all animals can withstand the seasonal elements. Some like the cooler months and others really enjoy sunning themselves in the summer sun. These are the most common critters that bury their way into roofing systems:

  • Mice & Rats
  • Squirrels
  • Birds
  • Termites, Spiders, & Other Bugs

If you see these guys running around your property, it could be an early sign that you have something living in your roofing system and attic. There are other signs you can look for that mean something has made its way into your house and is living there rent free.

Signs of an Infestation

Not all animals will be seen when they have taken up residence inside your roofing system, but this doesn’t mean they are not there. So, you will need to look for other signs of infestation. Regular examination of your attic and quick looks at your roof will ensure you get an early indication of these freeloaders.

What should you look for?

  • Animal Waste & Droppings
  • Nests – Typically made of sticks, stray, grass and leaves.
  • Burrows – Commonly found in insulation.
  • Animal Tracks & Claw Marks
  • Knaw Marks or Chewed Pieces
  • Holes In Shingles, Tiles, & Siding

Depending on the creature that is invading your home, there might be other signs to look for. If you believe you have something living in your roofing system, you might want to call a professional to assess your home and let you know for sure.

Preventative Measures

When an animal or colony of critters makes their way into your home, attic, and roof, they can cause significant damage. Most of the time, not only will the damage need to be repaired by a professional, but the cost of removing the creatures can be significant as well. There are a few preventative measures that a homeowner can take to inhibit critters from making their way inside.

  • Trim your trrees and bushes so your roof is not accessible for animals that can use them as a ladder to your roof.
  • Clean out your drains so birds can’t use the debris for nesting materials.
  • Keep your trash cans inside a garage or shed so there is no accessible food source.
  • Use specialized screens to close off known holes to discourage animals from finding their way inside.
  • Install roof ornaments to scare off critters and animals.
