A commercial roof can be big! Meaning it has a large surface area that is continuously baking in the Arizona sun. With a large commercial building, it can be difficult to make it energy efficient. One way to support energy efficiency and keep energy bills low is to measure the R-Value.

But what is the R-Value and why is it important?

During the summer, if your building is not as cool as it should be compared to the amount you are spending to run your HVAC system, you should consider the r-value. To help you, we are going to dive a little deeper into what the term “R-Value” means and why it matters to your commercial roof.

What Is R-Value?

The “R” in “R-Value” stands for resistance to heat flow. The R-Value of a roofing material describes its ability to restrict the amount of thermal energy that makes its way through it. So, the higher the R-value, the more heat is resisted and the better the material insulates your building. When considering which material is best for a commercial roof, the R-Value is incredibly important to consider in order to keep the building efficient.

Why Is The R-Value Important?

As we said above, to keep your building energy efficient, you want a roofing material that has a high R-Value. The more insulation, the less you will spend on cooling and heating bills throughout the year. Additionally, keeping your building at a comfortable temperature will help keep employees, tenants, and customers happy.

What Material Is Best For A Commercial Roof?

When selecting a roofing material for your commercial building, looking at the R-Value could save you significantly. Many buildings in Arizona have a spray foam roofing system because it is energy efficient. For example, the standard spray foam roof has an average R-Value of 6.5 per inch of thickness. Foam roofs can be applied over existing materials, which makes them a great option if you do not want to do a re-roof. Also, they are low maintenance and can last up to 25 years when properly cared for.

Other roofing materials, such as tile or metal, likely have a much lower R-Value. While these materials will give a greater aesthetic value, they are not as energy efficient, especially for a large, commercial building. So, if you are not worried about the look and do not want to spend as much on a roof, spray foam is the way to go.
