General maintenance is essential for your roof’s health! We recommend completing a maintenance checklist at least twice a year. This should include examining the materials, checking for leaks, and removing debris from the roof. There is one item that most homeowners do not consider when completing their roofing maintenance but is likely the most important!

Trees & large bushes can wreak havoc on a roofing system.

Maintaining the trees on your property and bushes around your home is also a way of maintaining your roof. Craven Construction is here to help you understand why keeping vegetation away from the roof is the best maintenance item.

Keep Vegetation Away From Your Roof

With the harsh desert climate and occasional monsoon, your roof is the first line of defense against the elements. When Mother Nature strikes, your roof must be in top working order for its longevity and overall health. Clearing vegetation away is the best maintenance item you can do during the cooler, winter months before the summer heat and sun shines.

Two particular roofing materials should take tree trimming a little more seriously – shingle and tile. When the wind blows, especially during monsoon season, trees can brush the granules off of the shingles. The more granules that are lost, the higher the probability that your roof will sustain damage. Similarly, tile can easily be damaged by trees that are too close to the roof. Tree branches can brush against the tile and pull them completely off of the roof.

If you have either shingles or tiles, you will want to ensure the trees around your home are properly trimmed and taken care of before they cause damage to your roof. In severe cases, branches can even puncture the roof’s surface, leading to leaks and structural issues.

Other Dangers of Vegetation

While trees and bushes can add shade to your property, like we just shared, they can also cause damage to your roof by damaging the material. Below are additional risks associated with vegetation near your roof:

  • Clogged Gutters – Leaves, twigs, and other debris from nearby trees can fall and accumulate in the gutters of your home. If left untouched, gutters can become clogged and prevent proper drainage. This can lead to water pooling on your roof, increasing the risk of water damage and mold growth.
  • Excessive Moisture – Vegetation near your roof can create a damp environment, even in Arizona, that can promote moss, algae, and mold growth. These organisms can deteriorate roofing materials and compromise the integrity of your roof.
  • Pest Infestations – Overhanging branches provide easy access for rodents, insects, and birds to your roof and attic space. Once they find their way inside your home, they can cause damage to insulation, wiring, and other components of your home.

Preventative Measures

There is a lot of risk with allowing vegetation to take over your roof. However, you can take preventative measures that will reduce these risks.

  • Regular Tree Trimming – Scheduling a session to remove overhanging branches that can damage your roof by touching the material or completely break off and fall on top of your roof. A general rule of thumb is to keep branches at least six feet away to prevent them from scraping during windy conditions.
  • Gutter Maintenance – Plan time to clean your gutters regularly to remove debris and prevent clogs. You can also consider installing gutter guards to help keep leaves and twigs out of your gutters while still allowing water to flow freely.
  • Remove Vegetation – If there is vegetation close to your home that is difficult to maintain or you don’t like, consider removing or transplanting it. Low-maintenance landscaping options that don’t pose a threat to your roof may be a better option.
