The roof is one of the most important systems of your home to keep you, your family, and your belongings protected from the elements. Though it is quite important, most homeowners do not fully understand the roofing system and the pieces that create it.
Did you know the roofing system is comrised of several layers?
Each layer of the roofing system has a specific function and when combined with the other layers, it safeguards your home. As tile roofs are most popular in Arizona, we’re breaking down each layer so you understand the importance from framing to the tiles.
7 Important Layers of a Roof
- Framing – A roof’s support structure typically made of wood trusses. This is designed to bridge the space above a room and also to withstand the material weight used on your roof.
- Roof Deck – Typically made of plywood, this material sits on top of the framing.
- Underlayment – A water-resistant material installed directly onto the roof deck. Craven Construction uses synthetic underlayment because its benefits far outweigh traditional underlayment. You can read about it HERE.
- Ventilation – Attic vents installed in various areas of your roof to allow air flow through the roofing system. This allows the warm air to escape your attic and keep your house at a cooler temperature.
- Flashing – Used to direct water water away from critical areas of your roof, mostly seams where materials meet on the roof. Flashing is typically a thin metal material.
- Batten – Typically made of wood, these horizontal strips are used as a fixing point for roofing materials. Some roofs require a grid of battens, which improves ventilation.
- Tile – The part of your roof that you typically see the most of. These interlocking materials are available in a variety of surfaces, edge treatments, and shapes that are designed for efficiency and durability against the elements.
